A Work Uniform for Brand Identity

T-shirts can be used to unify as well. Before I spoke of how t-shirt make a person an individual.

T-shirts can also "brand" a business, and can be used as uniforms to make a unified statement of a company, advertise their services and make a brand identity statement.

T-shirts take a stand - National Day of Protest - remembering Matthew Shepard

National Day of Protest  T-shirt

T-shirts used in the medium of advertising, can make a powerful statement in regards to how a person stands on equal rights for all human beings regardless of sexual preference, gender, age, religion, class or beliefs. This t-shirt is on honor National Day of Protest. The reaction to this t-shirt is shock and grief. It makes an impact on anyone who knows its meaning, or anyone who asks what the message stands for.

The medium of t-shirts with printed messages on them, can draw attention and awareness to a cause, preference or opinion. The t-shirt started out as a piece of clothing, and has grown into an important part of our culture and society. The meaning of this medium is empowerment and always striving for change and for justice and the common good. The t-shirt medium is a voice that can sometimes rings louder than the human voice. It is a statement to the world that we remember and will always fight for   what we believe in and never give up trying to make the world a better place for everyone!

T-shirts Root for the Home Team!

The medium  is a t-shirt. What do you have to say to the world about who you are rooting for?

The t-shirt started out as a garment for laborers, workers and the middle class as a "uniform" of sort. It was cool, did not hug too tight and did not constrict the wearer. The t-shirt was usually white, and people wore them out of necessity. They were cost effective, as well as fairly accessible to everyone.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and t-shirt has taken on a life of its own. T-shirts convey a persons passion, a belief, a political position, an opinion, as well as a culture. We are a culture of style and trend, and what we wear states who we are! It is true for adults as well as children and teens alike. A simple idea of a t-shirt has become a billboard for society to announce to the world, what is important to the wearer. It states what they are feeling, who they are inside, and their preferences. There is really no need to explain. It is all right on the front of the t-shirt.

The t-shirt has made a HUGE statement, both on a personal level as well as a cultural level in meaning of the medium. An example would be the cost of a t-shirt would be under $10 dollars if purchased at a basic store such as Target or Walmart. However, put the t-shirt in a different context, say screen print a sports team logo on the t-shirt, or a popular band, or maybe a sassy line from a movie and the value of the shirt increases. A $10 dollar t-shirt, now costs $40-$80 dollars. Same style t-shirt, but it is the message and style that makes the t-shirt more valuable and sought after.

Thus, we are a culture of advertising our position, beliefs, preferences, opinions, likes, dislikes and the balance of our style on a piece of fabric covering our body. Unlike tattoes, t-shirts allow the person to change their mind and opinion daily. I like this.....I may want to change my style or position and the t-shirt allows me to "go with the flow".  And it is a great deal less painful to acquire.

T-shirts convey emotion, opinion, style and also advertise products!

The BLOG - Meaning of the Medium will investigate and unpack the different meanings behind t-shirts and what they say about the person wearing them.

Here is an example of a t-shirt, conveying a healthy personal message of inspiration.

The wearer is telling us she is into personal expression of self - move, create inspire live along with the free flowing graphics, created a flow of positive energy and hope that is conveyed through this t-shirt.

Note the words are secondary to the artwork. You have to look hard to find the actual words to tell the story. The overall style is conveyed through total composition of the t-shirt. Free flowing, artwork of the woman on the top right is extending to the sky, giving a feeling of dance and movement.

Also, the artwork is not centered, but it is balanced - this gives interest to the t-shirt as well.

Welcome to my BLOG on T-Shirts

Here is a tidbit of history on the t-shirt, how it got it's name and how it was originally used.

"The t-shirt evolved from undergarments used in the 19th century, through cutting the one-piece "union suit" underwear into separate top and bottom garments, with the top long enough to tuck under the waistband of the bottoms." "Named the t-shirt due to the shape of the garment's "T" outline, they soon became popular as a bottom layer of clothing for workers in various industries, including agriculture. The T-shirt was easily fitted, easily cleaned, and inexpensive, and for this reason, it became the shirt of choice for young boys."(Wikipedia, 2009)

We have come a long way in how t-shirts are used and viewed in society. In fact today, they are "billboards for the body". T-shirts are not permanent like a tattoo, so you can change your mind and point of view daily if needed. The t-shirt gives you an idea of the wearers personality and point of view, just by the style and saying on their t-shirt.

This blog will give examples of various styles and attitudes of t-shirts as well as their evolution.

Enjoy!
